🌿 June Lake Education Events with WAPOA
Join WAPOA this June for two free community events focused on protecting and preserving the Whitefish Chain.
On June 6, WAPOA and LARA will host the 10th Annual AIS Roundtable featuring updates from MAISRC on aquatic invasive species research, prevention, and lake protection efforts.
Then on June 13, WAPOA’s Shoreline Restoration Open House will bring together local experts, restoration vendors, property owners, Crow Wing Soil & Water, and the Loon Center to share practical shoreline restoration solutions and lake-friendly practices.

👟 Grandpa’s Run for the Walleye Returns July 4!
Join WAPOA and the Whitefish Chain community for the 29th Annual Grandpa’s Run for the Walleye on Saturday, July 4, 2026, in Crosslake. This beloved Fourth of July tradition includes a 10K, 5K Run/Walk, and Kids Sunfish Dash, with proceeds supporting fish habitat and conservation efforts throughout the Whitefish Chain.
🛑 Protect the Whitefish Chain from Starry Stonewort!
WAPOA has purchased a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to strengthen early detection and management of starry stonewort and other aquatic invasive species on the Whitefish Chain. Ongoing fundraising now supports ROV use and maintenance, along with diver services, starry stonewort management, and future AIS prevention and response efforts—helping ensure faster, safer, and more effective protection of our lakes.
Since 1970, we have led the effort to permanently protect the land and water on and around the Whitefish Chain of Lakes in central Minnesota.

Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention
One of the primary goals for WAPOA is the prevention of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in our lakes. Over the last decade WAPOA has spent over $400,000 to provide additional hours of inspections at boat landings on the Whitefish Chain. In 2025, we spent over $80,000 for AIS prevention and inspections. All of this is made possible by your membership dues and generous donations.
