Aquatic Invasive Species and You!

The conservation of our lakes depend on limiting the amount of invasive species that enter them. WAPOA works hand in hand with other local lake associations as well as the Minnesota DNR to try to limit the contamination of the Whitefish Chain. Learn how you can be part of that mission!

One of the primary goals for WAPOA is the prevention of Aquatic Invasive Species in our lakes.  Over the last 9 years WAPOA has spent over $325,000 to provide additional hours of inspections at boat landings on the Whitefish Chain.  In 2023 alone, WAPOA spent $70,000 for AIS prevention and inspections.  All of this is made possible by your membership dues and generous donations.

Volunteer for AIS Early Detection Monitoring

The AIS Early Detection Monitoring program empowers lake residents and visitors to help protect the Whitefish Chain of Lakes by learning to identify and report aquatic invasive species like Starry Stonewort before they spread. Through community training in recognizing invasive species, monitoring high-risk areas, and quick reporting, volunteers play a vital role in safeguarding water quality, fisheries, recreation, and property values. This grassroots effort builds on WAPOA’s long-standing commitment to preserving our lakes for generations to come.

Decontamination Stations

If your boat, dock, lift, or other equipment has been in an AIS-infested lake, proper decontamination is required before entering another lake. While Crow Wing County provides free decontamination services, stations may not always be open. When stations are unavailable, boats and trailers can be rinsed at a self-serve car wash using high-pressure spray, focusing on trailers, bunks, axles, and other areas where invasive species may attach.
