Why WAPOA Uses an Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle?

A powerful tool supporting detection, monitoring, and management of starry stonewort and other aquatic invasive species.

Starry stonewort is currently confirmed in the Rush Lake Channel, where monitoring and containment efforts are underway in collaboration with partner agencies. The underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) allows for faster, safer, and more efficient monitoring than divers alone, improving early detection and response capabilities. Continued fundraising supports ROV operation and maintenance, diver services, starry stonewort management, and future aquatic invasive species detection and response efforts—helping protect the Whitefish Chain for the long term.

Why an ROV Enhances Our Efforts

  • Expanded toolkit: An ROV adds important capacity beyond divers and manual efforts—allowing more frequent, efficient surveys.

  • Year-round monitoring: It works under ice and in low visibility, giving us data even when divers can't safely go down.

  • Time-saving & cost-effective: Divers currently spend 7+ hours per site including decontamination. The ROV reduces volunteer time and allows more sites to be surveyed.

  • Precision tracking: GPS integration means pinpointing infestations accurately and supporting efficient treatment planning.

The underwater drone will be used primarily in the Rush Lake Channel to monitor, contain, and treat starry stonewort, with future use across the Whitefish Chain for other AIS.

Help Us Protect the Lakes We Love

Your support helps sustain critical tools and efforts that protect the Whitefish Chain from starry stonewort and other aquatic invasive species. Donations directly support ROV operation and maintenance, diver services, and ongoing AIS monitoring, management, and response efforts.

Whether you give $25 or $2,500, your contribution has a direct impact on protecting lake health, water quality, and recreation—now and for future generations.

Thank you to the many volunteers, partners, and supporters who make this work possible. Together, we are investing in prevention, early detection, and long-term protection of the lakes we love.
