“A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.”
- Henry David Thoreau
Since 1970, we have led the effort to permanently protect the land and water on and around the Whitefish Chain of Lakes in central Minnesota.

Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention
One of the primary goals for WAPOA is the prevention of Aquatic Invasive Species in our lakes. Over the last 8 years WAPOA has spent over $400,000 to provide additional hours of inspections at boat landings on the Whitefish Chain. In 2025, we’re spending over $80,000 for AIS prevention and inspections. All of this is made possible by your membership dues and generous donations.
